Resumen
This research reviews different methodologies that make work between rural communities and social communicators possible. These methodologies could be considered from the Epistemologies of the South that, according to Boaventura de Sousa Santos (2011), claim “new processes of production and valorization of valid knowledge and of new relationships between different types of knowledge” (p.16). Over the course of 2 years, the Communication, Community, Rurality Research seedbed explored inquiry methodologies that allowed it to work with communities and peasants in 6 municipalities and villages in the department of Tolima. The research offers a review of the methodologies that were implemented and that enabled the activation of communication processes and the elaboration of journalistic products as a result of dialogues and inter-actions within the peasant communities. The activation of dialogues and communication processes confirmed the existence of a social capital that, considered cultural and cognitive heritage, allows the socio-political claim of violated and opaque peasant communities. The research shows how the confluence of methodologies: Research-Participation, Research-Action-Participation, Systematization of Experiences, Situated Knowledge, as well as the implementation of Grounded Theory and Communication for Development methodologies, open for studies of the Communication fields of inquiry suitable for working with rural communities. The results achieved to date by the seedbed (and 6 of its investigations) show the need to investigate the scientific and social value of methodologies that allow us to understand the contributions and possibilities of Communication in the peasant world. In our experience, Journalism as a profession, and Communication as a field of inquiry, conceptually and methodologically complement and enrich each other. The possibility that opens up is to explore new ways of doing journalism from the academy and new inquiries and challenges for communication understood as a field of knowledge and social construction.
