The present research work is based on the theory of reception and was developed through a qualitative approach, through focus groups as a data collection technique, which allowed us to understand the perception that the audience has regarding a specific topic, in this case, the journalistic treatment given to suicide and the way in which a group of students of the Social Communication and Journalism program of the University of Ibague receive this information. In this sense, a reception analysis of suicide applied to students of the Social Communication and Journalism programme makes it possible to reflect on whether they are active recipients, insofar as they are capable of analysing the information transmitted to them on the treatment of this type of problem and are critical when it comes to receiving or constructing news about suicide.
